Company Profile

Nanoptics, Inc., was incorporated in 1987 in Gainesville, Florida USA and has become the world leader in custom, made-to-order plastic optical fiber (POF). The company is the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of choice for advanced specialty applications requiring low-weight, flexible plastic fiber optics.

James K. Walker, Ph.D., founder and President, first developed scintillating plastic optical fiber in 1967. Key personnel in the company have a combined experience of more than 40 years in the plastic optical fiber business. Nanoptics has patented technology for several POF processes and products.

PRODUCTS

The company is one of the largest U.S. manufacturers of fluorescent plastic optical fiber for use in aiming devices for archery and other weapons systems. The company holds patents on a special fluorescent fiber which permits the sight to operate in total darkness as well as bright ambient light. Nanoptics' other custom fibers are used in specially made optical products, including but not limited to optical sensors, digital communications and imaging elements (faceplates, endoscopes, and boroscopes) .

Nanoptics has developed POF light guides with the largest numerical aperture in the industry that are used in situations where maximum transmitted light intensity is critically important, as in medical applications. The company also fabricates wavelength shifting and fused fiber optic bundles and devices on a custom basis.

Our research efforts have resulted in the production of coherent bundles of thousands of plastic optical fibers.  These are used in fiberscope image guides for medical and industrial applications. Nanoptics introduced the Nanoscope™ which was the first plastic fiber optic endoscope in medical history.

Patent Portfolio for DataCom POF

Nanoptics, Inc. has several patents on a modified manufacturing process which permits the high speed, continuous manufacture of Advanced-Plastic Optical Fiber (A-POF).  These new products can be produced at low cost and include:

  1. Super Step Index POF - This product has an attenuation substantially below that of all commercially available POF.  The attenuation is in the range of 100 to 125 dB/km.

  2. Graded Index POF - This product can transmit data at 2 Gigabit per second over 100 meters.

  3. High Temperature POF - This product can operate at 125° C and high humidity.  It is designed for operation in the engine compartment of automobiles.

Nanoptics, Inc. will consider entering into a strategic partnership, joint venture or licensing arrangements concerning this new technology.
